I lost my Sri Lankan National identity card and thought that a blog might be useful to anyone who faces the same predicament. Let me just say that you absolutely need the old id number so write it down in many off places before you lose it.That said, if you are reading this,it's probably too late:-). So here are some places where you might be able to find the national id number:. Passport. driving license.

bank pass book. old diaries. financial documents (share market forms)If worst gets to worst try getting it from somewhere you used it. For example banks and telephone companies usually require that you submit a photo copy of your NIC (or NID) when you get registered. Forget the CEB, and the waterboard.OK. Now to the basic documents that you will need to get a replacement ID card:1.

Form RPD/V/7 (A green print form your Grama Sevaka -GS- will give you)2. Certified copy of the complaint made to the police regarding the loss of the identity card.3.

Birth certificate (original and photocopy)4. Certificate of employment, (if employed) obtained within three months.5. Number of the lost identity card.6. Stamps to the value of Rs.15.00.7.

Other documents8. Five colour photographs (1 3/8' x 7/8').BTW none of this is official and is just based on my expericence. If you want the official site go to but please checkout some sponsor ads if they seem useful to you.Now here is the hassle:First you will want the police report. Go to the police (preferably close to the place of your imaginary loss) and convince the policeman that you lost it. He will not take a statement immediately. You'll probably be sent from pillar to post but more likely to your grama sevaka asking for a missive to the police asking them to accept your statement re: the loss of your id. If your social engineering skills are good, this missive probably isn't required but I wouldn't count on it.

After pillaring and posting for some days, your GS will issue the required letter to the police station. After the police send you on a wild goose chase to post offices where ostensibly all lost id's are collected you are ready to give a statement to the police.

Getting the certified copy is then a couple of days (without greasing palms) at usually Rs. And unless you harangue the policemen into writing sagas the loss of an ID is bound to take less than a page. While we are on the topic of greasing palms, let me add my two cents worth to the equation. Greasing palms in SL certainly helps to get YOUR job done faster. However graft / bribes affect the very basic fabric of society. So if you are doing it, don't try to justify it with bogus claims like 'they get paid in peanuts' or some such rot. If you do it, face it and know that it is to the detriment of society in general but you are doing it for your personal benefit.Employer's letter certifying your postIf you were like me, the lost ID said you were a student, when you hadn't been in a school for aeons.

The only way to rectify that is to get your employer to issue you a letter saying what post you hold and for how long you've held it. If you want to claim you are a professional (Doctor/Engineer etc) take along your original degree certificate with a photo copy. The letter MUST be less than three months old at the time when you hand in your request, preferably much less and believe me, they check.Birth Certificate (Original and Photocopy)You have to handover both. The original will be returned at the time when they issue your ID.Sometimes they forget so remember to ask. Wizard climber english patch.

Don't let the euphoria of seeing your new ID card wash away the nagging question whether you are ever going to see your original birth certificate again. If you forget, digging up the file which will be buried after a few days is going to be a hassle.Number of the Lost ID cardRead the first chapter of this blog. Also a good idea to attach a photocopy of the lost ID. It helps.Stamps to the value of Rs.15.00.Paste these in the space provided on the bottom of page two of the form RPD/V/7. Get the stamps well in advance. There are chaps selling them at higher prices around in case you forget.

But higher prices for stamps?Five colour photographs (1 3/8' x 7/8')The official requirement if five. But at some stage you will be asked for six. So have six to begin with. Here are the (imagined by me) requirements for the photograph:Size: 1 3/8' x 7/8' which is the same as 3.5 cm x 2.2 cm (height x width) forget the last point twoFacing: Facing Right, Left ear should be fully visibleHead: The area should be around 50% of the area of the photoIf you can take a digital photo (2MegaPixel or more) and send it to a nice company, they will format and print it and post it to your place for less than 2$ (payable by Paypal). Email to include your phone number in the mailOther DocumentsIf your GS has certified your residence you shouldn't be needing these documents.
